Golf 2nd at OK Intercollegiate

DUNCAN, OKLA. – Northeastern State fired an opening round 311 to trail tournament leader St. Edwards, Texas, by just seven strokes in the Oklahoma Intercollegiate Women’s Golf Tournament Monday at the par 72, Territory Country Club.

"This is a tough golf course and our girls competed hard,'' said RiverHawks golf coach Scott Varner. "All our girls played with some courage on some very diffcult holes.

"Its good to be in this position (near the top of the leaderboard) again, something we've been use to being over my 11 year period here, especially in this diffcult of a field," said Varner.

St. Edwards opened with a 304 team total with Kirby Baker of St. Edwards the first round leader with a 1-over par 73.

Jenks freshman Whitney McAteer was in the hunt for medalist honors with an opening 75, just two strokes back of the leader.

Tammate Paola Torres was also within striking distance of the top spot with a 76 on the 5,885-yard layout.

"Whitney (McAteer) is just just being Whitney, she's rock solid," said Varner, adding,  She's a stud and  is playing with a lot of confidence.

"Today I went with Paola (Torres) around the course, just advised her, gave her a second opinion on shots and just reasured her on certain decisions she was making.

"Of course she was making all the shots and did remarkably well. She just playd solid. She was clearly one of the differences today,'' said Varner.

Trailing St. Edwards and Northeastern in the scoring were Angelo State at 314, Newman University 315 and Central Oklahoma at 316 to round out the top five.

Other RiverHawk scores on the first day were Katie Miller at 77, Shaunda Petree 83 and Liz Cagle 85.
