Texas A&M-Kingsville Passes RiverHawks
KINGSVILLE, TEXAS - Tenth-ranked Texas A&M-Kingsville behind the passing of quarterback Billy Garza defeated Northeastern State University 31-14 Saturday night at Javelina Stadium in a Lone Star Conference crossover game.
Garza passed for 314 yards, connecting on 24-of-32 and two touchdowns in leading the Javelinas to their fourth straight victory.
The Javelinas rolled up 530 yards in total offense, 314 in the air and another 216 on the ground. Fred Winborn led the Kingsville ground attack with 94 yards on 15 carries and a touchdown. Corneil Davis added 89 yards on 10 carries and a touchdown.
Northeastern State remains winless at 0-4 as they look ahead to LSC North Division play next Saturday when the RiverHawks host East Central University. Kickoff is 2 p.m. at Doc Wadley Stadium.
RiverHawks quarterback Woody Wilson connected on 10-of-14 passes for 139 yards and two touchdowns, a 20-yard toss to Ed Victorian (second quarter) and 20 yards to Anthony Moody, in the fourth quarter.
Wilson was the RiverHawks' top ground gainer with 56 yards on 16 carries with LaRon Elmer running for 16 yards on nine carries. The RiverHawks finished with 241 yards in total offense.
Kingsville took a 7-0 lead in the opening period when Garza connected with Winborn on a 14-yard scoring play to complete a 6-play, 66-yard drive. Christian Brom converted his first of four point-after attempts.
The Javelinas made it 14-0 when Corneil Davis scored on a 9-yard run as time ran out in the first period. Davis' TD capped an 8-play 86 yard march.
The RiverHawks got on the board in the second quarter when Ed Victorian scored on a 20-yard pass from Wilson at 6:29 of the second period. Jared Homer added the conversion, cutting Kingsville lead to 14-7.
Garza put the Javelinas up 21-7 at the half when he tossed a 12-yard pass to E.J. LeBlanc with 37-seconds left in the first half.
Northeastern State could not move on its opening drive of the second half and following a Joe Kok punt of 44 yards to the Javelinas' 13-yard line, Kingsville moved to the RiverHawks' 27 where Brom kicked a 44-yard field goal for a 24-7 advantage.
The Javelinas upped its lead to 31-7 when Garza marched Kingsville from its own 5-yard line after a Kok punt of 43 yards into the end zone.
The 12-play drive. which consumed 5:35 of the clock was capped by Winborn's second touchdown of the night, a 4-yard run with 12:19 left in the game.
Northeastern made it 31-14 when Wilson connected with Anthony Moody on a 20-yard scoring play with 2:59 remaining in the fourth quarter. The 4-play drive covered 38 yards following an 18-yard punt by the Javelinas' Cody Smith.
